Belize boasts the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere (185 miles long), in pristine condition. A diver can navigate exquisite coral formations all while sharing the sea with abundant marine life. Manta rays, Whale shark, sea turtles and reef fish of all kinds are here to see for the beginner or the seasoned pro. Belize is truly a divers paradise. Visibility in some of the remote areas of the barrier reef and around the offshore atolls may reach 200ft-220ft. however, excessive rainfall can adversely affect visibility. Water clarity inside the Barrier Reef averages 50ft. It rains considerably less around the offshore atolls of Belize than it does on the mainland, therefore visibility averages 100ft.-200ft. feet on the outside of the Barrier Reef and 120-150 feet at many of the atoll dive sites. Water temperature ranges from 77°-82° F. Three atolls lay offshore beyond the barrier reef and are irresistible for the diver looking for adventure. Turneffe Island, Lighthouse Reef, and Glover Reef entail much of the best diving in Belize. The most famous of the atolls is Lighthouse Reef, where you will find the infamous Blue Hole measuring 1000ft. across and 400ft.deep., visitors can also check out the nature preserve at Half Moon Cay. Diving the atolls of Belize will prove to be a memorable experience, if you enjoy crystal clear water, abundant marine life and the adventure of walls and drop-offs this is the place to be. For divers safety and piece of mind, the nearest recompression chamber is located on Ambergris Cay.
